Your building's “master” insurance policy will not cover your apartment in the event of a claim. The interior from floors to the walls to the ceilings are your responsibility.
- Water damage can be very expensive to repair – consider a small added premium to greatly increase your standard coverage.
- “Stuff happens.” If a visitor falls and gets hurt, you have to vacate your condo during repairs, or your dog bites someone, you can get coverage. But, be sure your carrier knows you have Prince!
- “Got stuff?” Items like jewelry, art work, collectibles, and other valuables usually require extra coverage beyond the standard policy limits.
- Working from home? Some condo insurance covers a home office – some doesn’t. Be sure to ask.
- Condo insurance is affordable, but don’t make the mistake of undervaluing your property or underestimating potential repairs to save money on premiums.
- Check with your building and your mortgage lender about insurance requirements.
- If you have a small claim, will it increase your premiums? Too many small claims can be a red flag for insurers. Consider a higher deductible to lower your premium and eliminate potential small claims.
- Get the right condo insurance by talking to an insurance expert who takes the time to ask the right questions to give you the right coverage.
